Abdul Rehman, a 30-year-old researcher from Balochistan’s Loralai district, is conducting groundbreaking research in Plant Developmental Biology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), with the aim of equipping his drought-stricken homeland with scientific tools to combat climate change, Gwadar Pro reported on Friday. Motivated by witnessing repeated crop failures due to water scarcity and temperature fluctuations, the Ph.D. candidate is focused on how crops withstand environmental stresses like drought, extreme temperatures, and disease. His work holds promise for Balochistan, where 80% of the population relies on rain-fed agriculture. Rehman credits SJTU’s world-class labs and China’s investment in scientific innovation for enabling his advanced research. Cultural exchanges and halal food options have eased his life in Shanghai, where he shares Pakistani traditions while embracing Chinese culture. Determined to return home after his postdoctoral studies, Rehman plans to train farmers and advise policymakers on cultivating climate-resilient, genetically modified crops. “Studying in China can transform destiny,” he said, hopeful that more youth from Balochistan will follow his path.
